The Fourth Andrew K. Dwyer Award Goes to Paul Adire

We are proud to share Nate Thorne’s remarks in awarding Paul Ardire the AKD Award at Dogg Day ’13:

“Who here knew Andrew Knox Dwyer? Well for all who have their hands raised, answer this: how much would he have loved this day and this party? I think the answer is more than anyone! And I think all of you being here, having fun, really does embody what he was all about.

As we the AKD Foundation attempt to carry Andrew’s legacy of enthusiasm and participation; and play it forward in the form of supporting charities that support children, giving them opportunities to participate in and enjoy events they otherwise may not have had the opportunity to, we give an award annually to a member of our extended “family” who we think has done a lot to distinguished themselves in this collective effort and best represents that spirit. This year, we want to honor Paul Ardire who was a great friend of Andrew, Elly and mine at Yale and has been a loyal supporter of the AKDF. He also co-founded and runs the Bulldog Cares Foundation. At this point, I would like to highlight that there were three other young men in the accident 10 years ago who lost their lives. I think it is important that we acknowledge and remember them tonight. Bulldog Cares is our partner in commemorating not just Andrew, but Sean, Kyle and Nick as well, and is the best and only group working in the memory of all four of them. It is for his support of us and his efforts with the BDC that we give this year’s Andrew K. Dwyer Award to Paul Ardire.”

The Third Andrew K. Dwyer Award Goes to Beth Schmidt

Congratulations to Beth Schmidt, who was named the winner of the third annual Andrew K. Dwyer Award at Dogg Day ’12. Beth was a schoolmate and dear friend of Andrew’s at Hotchkiss. In 2004 Beth ran in the NYC Marathon and raised over $20,000.00 for Andrew’s Foundation. Beth was honored for her involvement with AKDF and her work in founding Wishbone, a non-profit organization that was launched last year, designed to send low-income high school students to after school and summer enrichment programs. Beth was motivated to start Wishbone while teaching in South Central, Los Angeles. She ran in the LA Marathon to raise money to allow some of her students to attend summer programs in the fine arts, music, liberal arts, sciences, environment and athletics that without her help would not have been possible. Andrew’s Foundation helped Beth with some of the logics and continues to support Wishbone.

In December, Beth was recognized on the prestigious Forbes List for “30 under 30 in Education” for her work with Wishbone. We are ecstatic to congratulate Beth on these much deserved accomplishments.
